Slender Velvet Bush
Slender Velvet Bush is part of my Sandbelt series, showing at Glen Eira City Gallery from 24 July - 24 August. The Sandbelt vessels feature the flora of the Sandbelt region in south-east Narrm/Melbourne (Boonwurrung Country). I walked over 100 kilometres on a series of urban hikes, visiting areas of remnant vegetation across the region.
Slender Velvet Bush will be shipped or available for collection in late August.
Slender Velvet Bush (Lasiopetalum baueri) was thought to be locally extinct until two plants were discovered clinging to the cliffs at Red Bluff. It has now been propagated by the local indigenous plant nursery, and its elegant grey leaves and russet-pink bell flowers are now a happy addition to local gardens.
This large vase is coil-built in white clay. The surface is painted with multiple layers of underglaze and carved to create the botanical design. It is clear-glazed on the inside and on the plant only, leaving the white background bare and matte.
Dimensions: H 22 x W 25 x D 15 cm
