Coastal Tea Tree
Coastal Tea Tree is part of my Sandbelt series, showing at Glen Eira City Gallery from 24 July - 24 August. The Sandbelt vessels feature the flora of the Sandbelt region in south-east Narrm/Melbourne (Boonwurrung Country). I walked over 100 kilometres on a series of urban hikes, visiting areas of remnant vegetation across the region.
Coastal Tea Tree will be shipped or available for collection in late August.
Coastal Tea Tree (Gaudium laevigatum or Leptospermum laevigatum) grows on the dunes of the Sandbelt region, and further inland if given the chance to spread. In spring, it is covered with a profusion of five-petalled flowers.
This large vase is coil-built in white clay and is oval in cross-section. The surface is painted with multiple layers of underglaze and carved to create the botanical design. It is clear-glazed on the inside and on the flowers only, contrasting with the matte leaves and clay.
Dimensions: H 31 x W 28 x D 17 cm
