Floral explosion at the peak of spring

Saturday afternoon on the Melbourne Cup Day long weekend. 28 perfect sunny degrees, the barest wisps of cloud in a blue sky. After a mild, wet winter, the garden is exploding with new growth.

Grevillea ‘Moonlight’, ‘Big Red’ kangaroo paws, ruby bottlebrush, pelargoniums and climbing roses are in full bloom. Cotinus ‘Grace’ is glowing with burgundy leaves and puffs of ‘smoke’. The salvias – ‘Indigo Spires’, ‘Black Knight’ and ‘Alba’ are just starting their long flowering period. Italian lavender, irises and euphorbia are fading.

In the backyard, the wall is now completely covered with Boston ivy, the paulownia is in bloom and the herbs have shot to seed.
