In utter rapture over the exquisite Persian manuscripts at the State Library of Victoria’s Love and Devotion exhibition. The detail is incredible. This is a little obscure, but I think my favourite elements are the surface detail of the buildings – the geometric patterns on walls, roofs, rugs and fabric. The lovechild of medieval European manuscripts (which I love) combined with Islamic tiles (which I also love).
The manuscripts are from the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The Bodleian’s Deputy Librarian presented at the State Library of Victoria recently and talked about the reaction in Oxford when the State Library’s staff turned up with the idea – “An exhibition of Persian manuscripts in Melbourne, Australia? Of course, why didn’t we think of that?”
A little sample for your viewing pleasure… though not a shadow of the real thing.
